How to Connect a Double Switch?

In this article, you will learn how to connect a standard double switch as well as a double two-way switch. You will also understand what these types of switches are used for and in which cases they are indispensable.

Why Use a Double Switch?

First, it's important to understand the purpose of this type of switch with two control buttons to consider how it might be installed in your space. By using a double switch, you can control two separate areas within the same room. For example, in your living room, you might have an entrance area and an entertaining area, giving you the freedom to illuminate part or all of the room. The same applies to larger rooms such as a living room that can be divided into two distinct areas: the lounge and the dining room. Or in a corridor or staircase.

The ambiance you wish to create can be modified using this double switch, allowing you to save energy by illuminating only the part of the room you need. These double switches can be installed at two different points in the room to provide dual control.

Installing a Double Switch

As explained previously, there are two types of double switches:

Installation of a Standard Double Switch

This two-button switch allows for standard switching, with each button dedicated to a separate lighting circuit. It consists of two electrical switches integrated into the same mechanism. Each button must be connected to its own lighting circuit. The phase is common to both switches.

As with any modification to the electrical circuit, it is essential to turn off the power via the circuit breaker on the electrical panel. The installation process is similar to that of any conventional switch:

  • Drill a hole in your wall sized to fit your flush-mounted box
  • Place the flush-mounting box
  • Connect the various wires:
    - The phase wire to terminal L of the first switch
    - Another wire (usually red) connecting the two L terminals of both switches to each other
    - A wire connecting each switch to its designated light fixture
    - A neutral wire and an earth wire connecting both lights to the electrical panel
  • Insert the double switch support into the flush-mounted box and secure it
  • Attach the finishing plate
  • Test your installation by turning the power back on

Installation of a Double Two-Way Switch

This type of switch will control two different lights with 4 control points (2 control points per switch).

  • Drill a hole in your wall sized to fit your flush-mounted box
  • Place the flush-mounting box
  • Connect the various wires:
    - The phase to terminal L of the first switch
    - For the first double switch only: another phase wire (red) connecting the two L terminals of both switches together
    - For the second double switch only: A wire connecting each switch to its designated light fixture (on terminals L) + Two jumper wires (usually orange) connecting the two double switches together (terminals 1 and 2)
    - A neutral wire and an earth wire connecting both lights to the electrical panel
  • Insert the double switch holder into the flush-mounted box and secure it
  • Attach the finishing plate
  • Test your installation by turning the power back on
