Fuses
The role of the fuse
The fuse acts as a safety barrier in an electrical circuit. When an excessive current flows through the metal filament, it melts quickly, instantly cutting off the flow of current. The fuse has many advantages. It protects electrical appliances from overheating, and prevents the risk of fire by cutting the circuit before an overload causes major damage. It ensures personal safety by reducing the risk of electric shock by cutting the circuit if necessary. Finally, it can easily be replaced by an identical model once blown.
The difference between a fuse and a circuit breaker
The main roles of the fuse and circuit breaker are to protect electrical circuits, but they differ in several respects:
- Fuse: Disposable. Once blown, it must be replaced.
- Circuit breaker: Resettable, it can be used several times without needing to be replaced. The circuit breaker protects your installation from overloads and short circuits (with a breaking capacity that can be adapted according to the NF standard).
