Flush-mounted or surface-mounted. How do you install Schneider Electric Pragma enclosures?
A surface-mounted enclosure is mainly used in refurbishments and does not require drilling into the wall - the enclosure is mounted directly on the surface. These surface-mounted installations are more cost-effective and are less invasive alternatives to flush-mounted ones. The only drawback is that the wires have to be routed and covered through trunking, which is less attractive.
For installations in France, please note that surface-mounted installations must comply with certain rules to ensure safety and correct use:
- Installation at an angle is prohibited
- IP and IK ratings must be adapted to suit the room in which the electrical enclosure is installed
- Junction boxes must not be covered and must remain perfectly accessible
- Protective covers and end caps must be fitted to the rails to prevent access to the cables
- An enclosure must be designed with at least 20% spare capacity, with a limit of 6 modules in multi-unit buildings
It is imperative to respect the relevant regulations specific to the country of installation.
Flush-mounted installations are more commonly used in new-build housing or shops or as part of a total renovation. Here, Pragma electrical panels must be installed to the main electrical supply in compliance with height accessibility standards. The enclosure, along with the accessories, is recessed into the wall in a flush-mounted box, with just the thin door sticking out. It's aesthetically pleasing and neat. It is important to follow precise installation rules according to standard NF C 15-100, especially when separating strong currents (power circuits, lighting, sockets, etc.) from weak currents (data, telephone, internet, etc.).
Generally, surface-mounted installations are common in refurbishment projects, while flush-mounted installations are used for renovations or new builds.

What is the definition of Class 2 for Pragma enclosures?
All Schneider Electric Pragma enclosures are made of plastic and fitted with insulated bottoms that ensure a class 2 installation. They are also known as "double insulated".
The NF C15-100 standard, paragraph 558-3-1-2-2, outlines several conditions that must be respected including:
- Terminal separators and terminal covers must be fitted upstream of the circuit breakers and other electrical modules in the enclosure
- Once installed and connected, the equipment must be able to withstand, for one minute, a voltage of 4000 V between active parts and external metal parts
- Insulating screws should be avoided in the enclosure and replaced with metal screws if possible
- No intermediate or external conductive part must be connected to a protective conductor
- The standard double insulation symbol must be affixed to the inside and outside of the enclosure
